SPECTATOR SPORTS


Nassau Coliseum
Home of the New York Islanders hockey team, and also host to a variety of other sports including basketball, lacrosse, skating and wrestling.

Thoroughbred Racing
Long Island is home to the Belmont Stakes, the third jewel in racing's Triple Crown. Belmont Park, located in Elmont, attracts amateur handicappers, horseplayers and visitors from May through October every day but Tuesday. Belmont is closed for the month of August.

Auto Racing
Sports car, formula car and motorcycle racing can be enjoyed at Bridgehampton from the first weekend in April until the beginning of November. Riverhead Raceway features stock racing every Saturday night from May through mid-November.

NHL Hockey
The 16,000 seat Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale is home to the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League. The 80 game season begins in October and ends in April.

Indoor Lacrosse
Uniondale's Nassau Coliseum is the home field for the New York Saints of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League during its January, February and March season.

Major League Baseball
Baseball fans of the New York Mets can watch their team play in Queens County at the 55.000 seat Shea Stadium in flushing.

Tennis
The Norstar/Hamlet Challenge Cup is a prelude to the U.S. Open. With no seat more than 80 feet from the court, this is a great chance to see the game's major players up close.

Golf
Held in July and August, the Northville Long Island Golf Classic, a Senior PGA tournament, attracts such names as Trevino, Rodriguez and others. Over 1,000 golfers participate annually in the Long Island Golf Classic at Meadow Brook Hunt Club in Jericho, NY.

Polo
Polo matches are held each Sunday between May and November at the Bethpage State Park and at Whitney Lane in Old Westbury. Admission and parking are free.

Horseback Riding
Deep Hollow Range in Montauk and Lakeside Riding Academy, located in West Hempstead, offer horseback riding.

Bowling
Leisure Bowling Centers, Inc. owns and operates seven bowling centers in Suffolk County and accommodates over one million bowlers annually.

Hiking
The Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference maintains hiking trails throughout Long Island and many state parks have hiking trails as well.

Miniature Golf
Miniature golf may be played at many spots throughout the Island, including Sky Drive Gold and Family Entertainment in Farmingdale, or at Castle Golf Amusement, located in Centereach.

Skydiving
Skydiving is offered at Long Island Skydiving Center. They are located at 91 Montauk Highway, East Moriches and can be reached by calling (631) 235-9968 or on their website at http://www.longislandskydiving.com

Hot Air Ballooning
Hot air balloon rides are offered through Adventures Aloft, located in Deer Park.

Sky Gliding
Sky gliding is available through Sailors Incorporated located in Westhampton.

Jet Skiing
With a rented wet suit you can jet ski almost year-round in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
